What’s it Like to Live with ADHD?
Everyone’s experience of ADHD is unique. Today we’re sharing some thoughts from another of our coaching clients who has ADHD. We’ll call her Jill to protect her privacy. Jill is in her mid-20s and works in a retail environment.
When did you find out you had ADHD? How did you feel about getting the diagnosis?
Officially 6 months ago. I felt a sense of validation and relief, but also sadness it wasn't picked up earlier. I wondered how different things could have been.
What are your main symptoms?
Lack of self-discipline and lack of motivation. Committing to things and following through is extraordinarily difficult.
How does ADHD influence your life the most?
It's had a major impact on my education and career. I didn’t reach my full potential at school or uni because I could not put my head down and do the work. I was good at it when I did.
What is the hardest thing about having ADHD?
Knowing exactly what it is that I want to do and why and not being able to follow through. There's an immovable mental block.
Do your friends and colleagues know you have ADHD?
Yeah, I'm open about it because if more people are you can pick it up earlier. There is a lot of misunderstanding, so I try to educate people.
How have you been managing your ADHD?
It's very difficult to get professional support. I tried medication but there were side effects, so I’m not settled yet. I see a psychologist and have a coach too – anything that can help my day-to-day life. I also have depression and general anxiety.
What positives are you aware of from having ADHD?
I’ve strong communication skills and empathy. I know there are more, but I’m still learning what these are.
What advice would you give someone who thinks they may have ADHD
Start the process. Hang in there. Get support around you - don’t go it alone.
