Perfectionism – A Productivity Fallacy
Perfectionism. It's a pretty illusion. It can be captivating. It can provide a happy and safe place as you work away.
But are you really working or are you keeping yourself busy with something you can justify as work?
The illusion of perfect can keep us in the illusion of working. But working in the sense we want – getting results – means being productive and moving towards your goals. Making progress.
Don't let the illusion of perfect keep you busy without the reward. Don’t let it keep you stuck in a state of paralysis, rushing to meet deadlines, never being fully satisfied. Or not completing work as it’s not quite good enough so you never know when to stop.
Focus on PROGRESS not perfection.
Because perfect is not real. There is no perfect person. There is no perfect answer. No perfect piece of work.
Aiming for perfect places an unrealistic expectation on our work, on what we do and don’t do, on our self.
Perfectionism is based on the fear of judgement. The fear of not being good enough, not being smart enough. And if that's what people think, will they like me? Will they love me?
There's a lot that sits behind perfectionism.
The good news is there are tools to break you out of it. You can increase your productivity. You can be you and still have people like you and love you.
There is no perfect person so please stop aiming for the impossible.
Give yourself permission to be you. When you do this, you will feel a relief like you have never felt before.
If you do find yourself continually busy or spinning circles with perfectionism, it's time to look beneath the surface. It’s time to face the fears that are keeping you trapped and getting in your own way.
You can break this cycle. And you will feel so good when you have.
